After serving our country, many veterans come home with life altering injuries—some resulting in permanent disabilities.
Veterans seeking to modify their homes to make them accessible often face hundreds of dollars in permit fees, creating a significant barrier to meeting their needs. These fees impose a financial burden not only on the veterans themselves, but also on their families and caregivers.
It should not be this way.
API’s Impact
Our model bill will encourage states to adopt a policy that eliminates permit fees when making changes to one’s home to increase accessibility. By doing so, we are removing a financial and housing barrier to ensure that our veterans can reintegrate into their communities and live a civilian lifestyle.
